Plastindia Foundation, an apex body of major associations, organisations and institutions related to the plastics industry, is preparing the ground to set up a pilot project to demonstrate the economic and technological feasibility of collecting plastics from municipal wastes and converting them into useful products.

“The idea is to encourage entrepreneurs across country to take up such projects not only for economic gains but also to rid plastics from municipal wastes. We had initiated a similar step with regard to plastic bottles and today the combined re-cycling capacity of such bottles is more than availability of the scrap,” Mr Ashok Goel, President of Plastindia Foundation, told press persons here on Tuesday.

Land acquisition

He said the foundation was ready with the technology and was in the process of acquiring a land in the NCR region to set up the estimated Rs 1 crore plant.

Plastics, at present, account for three per cent of the combined municipal waste generated in the country by weight.

He was here in connection with the Southern India launch of Plastindia, as a run-up to the eighth international plastics exhibition and conference scheduled in Delhi from February 1-6, 2012.

Other initiatives

The foundation has taken other initiatives such as setting up of a knowledge centre in Gujarat to create a resource pool of plastics and polymer engineering graduates and creating of Plastindia Plasticulture to promote other applications of plastics in agriculture.

Plastindia 2012

Mr Raj Kumar Lohia, Chairman of National Executive Committee, Plastindia 2012, said the event was expected to see over two lakh visitors from 40 countries, with between 1,500 and 2,000 exhibitors.

On the Indian plastics industry, Mr Goel said the Rs the 1,50,000 crore investment was likely to flow in the upstream industry to set up 11 petrochemical complexes by 2015.

“In agriculture alone, about 17 million hectares are to be brought under drip irrigation over the next three to four years, which will further push use of plastics in irrigation and pipes,” he said.
