The BMW Motorrad-TVS Motor Company alliance has started production of super bikes at TVS Motor’s facility in Hosur and will launch two super bikes this year

The alliance has started production of super bikes on a new common platform , said K N Radhakrishnan, President & CEO of TVS Motor Company at the company’s annual general meeting here.

While BMW is expected to formally launch G310 R in October this year., the first motorcycle produced out of the alliance and showcased in global auto shows., TVS plans to launch a 310cc bike for sale under its own brand in the Indian market during the last quarter of this fiscal.

At the Auto Expo held early this year, TVS has showcased the concept bike Akula 310cc bike, which is reported to be the TVS version of the BMW G310 R.

“More details such as price and others will be announced around the launch,” said Radhakrishnan.

The BMW alliance is expected to help TVS Motor expand its presence in the premium motorcycle market, where the company sells upto 200cc (Apache) now. The above-250cc motorcycle market is expected to achieve stronger growth in India going forward due to growing preference of such super bikes among young buyers. Also, the mid-size super bike market (250cc-750cc) in India is seen as under-served category. Royal Enfield dominates this segment despite entry of more players.

Market share

In the domestic market TVS Motor hopes to gain market share by the end of this fiscal, helped by growth in bike sales on account of expected revival in rural market and improved sales of scooters. “We started the year with 13.2 per cent share and we have been gaining share every month. We hope to end the fiscal with 15 per cent share in overall two wheeler sales,” he added.

TVS Motor expects to build on the success of the recent launches such as Apache, Victor and moped XL 100 to fetch higher sales during the remaining quarters of current fiscal. Sales of new Apache are expected to grow from 7,000-8,000 units a month to 10,000 units a month around Festive season. Apache has garnered a share of 17 per cent.

Also, monthly sales of Victor are expected to grow to 20,000 units from 14000-15,000 units a month now. With new Victor, TVS’ new product in the executive segment, the company aims to garner about eight per cent share in that segment.

TVS expects to sustain strong double digit growth in scooters during this year and seeks to grow the market share in scooters to 16-17 per cent from 14 per cent, helped mainly by Jupiter.
