Indians need to “bring back the spirit of frugality”, says Mr R Seshasayee, Vice-Chairman, Ashok Leyland, and a former President of the Confederation of Indian Industry.
Mr Seshasayee, who received the ‘M S Swaminathan Environment Protection Award from the Rotary Club of Madras East', noted in his acceptance speech that for centuries, Indians abhorred conspicuous lifestyle. But today, that is changing, he said.
Noting that “prosperity pollutes” as much as “poverty pollutes” (which is an adage), Mr Seshasayee said that simple living helps the cause of environment protection.
We have become “gluttonous” in our consumption of resources, he said, noting that what was a luxury twenty years ago was a necessity today.
The citation of the award records the achievements of Ashok Leyland, a company that Mr Seshasayee was the Managing Director of for over a decade, in addressing the concerns of fuel efficiency and emissions. It also records the green cover at Ashok Leyland's manufacturing facilities, as also the company's efforts in spreading awareness about environment protection.
