The Delhi Metro chief, Mr E. Sreedharan, has described punctuality, integrity, professional competence and social accountability as the four cardinal pillars of work culture, and attributed his success in life to scrupulous adherence to these values.

Mr Sreedharan, also president of the Foundation for Restoration of National Values (FRNV), made the comment while delivering a lecture on ‘Restoring values and ethics in business' at the HLL Lifecare facility here.

Stating that the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro rail were the two most challenging projects of his career, Mr Sreedharan said all the works were completed ahead of schedule and within the budget, thanks to the core values and ethics he followed and the support he received from his team members.

Punctuality means respecting the time of others. Time is irreplaceable, he said.

“Integrity is high levels of moral values and we should not compromise trust and integrity even under pressure,” Mr Sreedharan added.

Professional competence is a standard requirement to perform a specific job. “We must consistently learn and acquire knowledge to improve performance,” he said.

Social accountability can be achieved through increased public participation and focus on community welfare, Mr Sreedharan said.

“Ethics must be a compulsion, not an option,” he added.

Mr M. Ayyappan, CMD of HLL Lifecare and head of FRNV Kerala chapter, presided over the function.
