Nabard has released Rs 21.23 crore under the Natural Resource Management scheme in Karnataka.

The scheme is to improve the livelihood of rural poor, support planning and promotion of rational use and conservation of natural resources.

“In Karnataka, we have seven projects sanctioned so far. The total financial outlay is Rs 30.03 crore, of which, Rs 21.23 crore has been released. These projects are essential for continuous and self sustaining livelihood opportunities,” said Mr S. N. A. Jinnah, Chief General Manager, Nabard, Karnataka.

The projects funded include Sustainable Development through Eco-Tourism and biodiversity conservation in B. R. Hills, Chamrajnagar district; integrated coir project for sustainable livelihood enhancement at Gubbi, Tamkur district; SRI paddy cultivation in 10 districts; Efficient irrigation pump sets programme on high voltage system feeders in Chikkaballapur district; development of vulnerable communities in drought-prone rural areas through sustainable resource management and livelihood promotion services in Bijapur district; providing livelihood support to medicinal plant gatherers and cultivating communities and integrated dairy development project in Dharwad district.

Nabard is also operating Producers' Organisation Development Fund. “Through this, a producers' organisation which basically consists of a group of producers involved in either farm or non farm activities get funding assistance,” said Mr Jinnah.

It is a registered body or a legal entity where producers are the shareholders; it deals in business activities related to primary produce/product and works for the benefit of the member producers.

“Here a portion of profit is shared amongst the members and balance transferred to share capital and reserves. Through better organisation, producers can utilise scale to procure inputs at a lower price, and gain more selling power for their produce/product,” said Mr Jinnah.
