The Orissa Government has decided to implement an Rs 324-crore project for supplying drinking water to Cuttack city and nearby Choudwar town from Mahanadi and Kathjodi rivers. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting presided by the Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, here yesterday.
Plan for supply of drinking water to Cuttack was made way back in 1949 keeping in mind a future population of two lakh. Only groundwater is used for drinking water in the city since then. Now, the city's population has grown to six lakh with requirement of water put at 93.91 million litre a day (mld). The population of Cuttack is projected to go up to 12.3 lakh by 2043. Similarly, the population of Choudwar is likely to touch 1.35 lakh by then.
While the daily requirement of drinking water in Cuttack will be 203 mld, the requirement in Choudwar will also increase to 18 mld.
