The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project for Urban Regeneration in Ahmedabad has been named by KPMG as one of the 100 most innovative global infrastructure projects that make cities liveable and sustainable.

Conceived as an urban regeneration and environmental improvement initiative currently underway, it involves the reclamation of a 10.5 km stretch of the banks of the Sabarmati River, creating a new public space for cultural and civic institutions. Along the river, space will be made for recreation use and markets. “The aim is to transform the stretch of the river from a geographical divider in the city to a focal point for leisure and recreation,” according to a release here on Tuesday.

KPMG’s Global Infrastructure Practice also hailed the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) as one of the 100 most innovative and inspiring urban infrastructure projects in the world.

India is expected to witness almost 400 million people migrating to urban centres in the next few decades. The burgeoning population of the country requires creation of 300 million new jobs in the next 25 years. The DMIC aims to meet these challenges by creating globally competitive environment and world class infrastructure to activate local commerce, enhance foreign investment, create employment opportunities, enhance exports and attain sustainable development, said Mr Arvind Mahajan, Head, Infrastructure Advisory Group, KPMG India.
