The Tea Board has instructed brokers in South India to test samples of teas that fetch (at an auction) prices below the south Indian annual auction average of Rs 70 a kg.

Only after testing can such teas be catalogued for sale in the subsequent auction.

The testing is done to ensure that these teas pass the standards specified under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act or Food Safety Standards Act in force.

The testing should be done on a weekly basis and the analysis report, obtained from an accredited laboratory. This report should be sent to the Tea Board. The cost should be borne by the factory concerned.

This is applicable even for teas withdrawn at the auction and sold as out-lot. The Board has asked brokers to discourage out-lot sale. “If the unsold quantity in a broker's catalogue is more than 20 per cent continuously for over five weeks, the brokers' licence would be withheld”, the Board has warned.

The Board has asked brokers to submit to it the details of teas sold as out-lot as also direct sales on a monthly basis.
