Rain and snow have scaled to being widespread over Jammu and Kashmir during the 24 hours ending Sunday afternoon. It was scattered over Himachal Pradesh while isolated rain or thundershowers was reported from Punjab during this period, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said on Sunday afternoon.

Satellite imagery showed the presence of convective (rain-bearing) clouds extending over most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab and north Rajasthan.

A weather warning issued by the IMD said that heavy to very heavy rain or snowfall would occur at a few places over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday.

Heavy to very heavy rain or snowfall would also occur at isolated places over Uttarakhand during this period.

Isolated thunder squalls or hail would occur over Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, while the heavy weather is expected to progress linearly to the east over Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Minimum temperatures have risen to above normal by 4 to 7 degrees Celsius over many parts of northwest and central India. The lowest minimum temperature reached double digits at 10 degress C recorded at Sikar (Rajasthan) in the plains of the country.

The causative ‘active’ western disturbance would continue to affect the western Himalayan region and plains of northwest India at least for four more days from Sunday, the IMD said.

Its impact would be felt over the Gangetic plains and the Northeastern States from Tuesday.

Short-term forecast valid Wednesday said that widespread rain or snowfall would occur over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh from today (Sunday) onwards.

Scattered rain or snow would occur over Uttarakhand today and increase thereafter.

Scattered rain or thundershowers would also occur over Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.

Scattered rain or thundershowers would unfold over Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh from Monday morning onwards.

Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from Tuesday onwards.

Extended forecast until Friday said that scattered rain or snowfall would occur over western Himalayan region.

Scattered rain or thundershowers has also been forecast over Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Northeastern States during this period.
