As Bihar has witnessed bumper paddy crops, the state government has decided to ensure its milling in Punjab due to insufficient rice mills, Deputy Chief Minister Mr S K Modi said on Monday.

“We have decided to ensure milling of rice in Punjab because of bumper crops,” Mr Modi said while addressing a function here.

Stating that Bihar lacked sufficient rice mills, Mr Modi said the state government had decided to procure 30 lakh metric tonne of paddy through Primary Agriculture Cooperatives (PACs), State Food Corporation and Food Corporation of India by April next year.

The PACs, SFC and FCI have started procurement of paddy from December 9 this year.

Mr Modi criticised the erstwhile RJD government for its alleged failure to ensure growth of agriculture-based industries in Bihar. “We have given thrust on it,” he said.

The state government had made available Rs 850 crore to cooperative banks for paddy procurement and the farmers would receive the payment instantly, Mr Modi said.

There is tremendous potential for sugarcane, maize and rice based industries in Bihar, Mr Modi said.

We expect that smaller entrepreneurs would come forward with an investment of Rs 30 crore to Rs 40 crore in agriculture and other sectors soon, said the Deputy Chief Minister.
