The Bay of Bengal is throbbing with sudden activity as a low-pressure area with a low-pressure embedded in a fresh easterly wave intensifying rapidly. The system has already spun up as a deep depression, and is likely to become a tropical cyclone over the next day or two.
It has been assigned the tag of 06B by international weather agencies, which find the system becoming a minimal tropical cyclone and heading towards the Tamil Nadu coast over the next 3-4 days. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) located the deep depression over south-east Bay of Bengal about 900 km south-east of Chennai, 600 km south-west of Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
NUMBERED CYCLONE
The system is likely to move north-westwards, further intensify into a cyclonic storm on Tuesday. It would be named ‘Thane,' according to the tropical cyclone naming protocol approved and made valid for the region by the appropriate global authority.
The system it is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast between Cuddalore and Nellore by early morning of Thursday. A heavy weather warning issued by the IMD on Monday afternoon said that heavy rainfall would occur at one or two places over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next two days.
An almost similar forecast outlook is being maintained by the Regional Integrated Multi-hazard Early Warning System (Rimes) at Bangkok. This was made available to Business Line by Dr Jayaraman Potty, Chief Scientist, Severe Weather Information, at Rimes.
Rainfall activity would increase in intensity over extreme south peninsular India during this period.
Cold wave conditions persisted over remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and over some parts of Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra, Kutch, interior Karnataka and north Orissa.
SEVERE COLD
The lowest minimum temperature of -1.2 deg Celsius was recorded at Amritsar. Fog to shallow fog has been forecast over some parts of Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the morning hours during next two days.
