The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B. S. Yeddyurappa, has urged the Central Government to immediately impose a ban on the use of endosulfan (an insecticide) in the country.

Speaking to the press during his visit to Mangalore on Friday, he said that India's apprehensions on implementing the ban, even if the Geneva meet decides to ban it, shows the concern of the Central Government towards farmers in the country. It is a shame on the country, he said.

(India attended the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants at Geneva. The convention prominently discussed the issue of ban on endosulfan.)

He urged that the Prime Minister should intervene and put an end to the use of endosulfan in the country.

Mr Yeddyurappa said that the Karnataka Power Minister, Ms Shobha Karandlaje, is in the forefront of creating awareness about the ill-effects of endosulfan, and is fighting against the use of endosulfan in the State.

The State Government has also announced compensation for those affected by endosulfan in Karnataka, he said.

When his attention was drawn towards the recent hunger strike by the Kerala Chief Minister seeking a ban on endosulfan, he said: “We will extend our support to those who are fighting for its ban in the country.”

The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, had recently observed a day-long fast seeking a ban on its use.
