With kharif failing farmers in Andhra Pradesh, the State Government has begun an exercise to assess the actual loss in order to prepare the list of mandals that are hit by drought. Sources in the Ministry of Revenue have indicated that at least half of the 1,128 mandals might be listed as drought-hit.

“We estimate that at least 450 mandals were severely hit by drought as they reported deficit rainfall this kharif. This, however, is based on preliminary information we received from different parts. The number could vary once we received full information,” they said.

Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Revenue, had directed the District Collectors to conduct a survey and send a report on the impact of drought. Reports from most parts were awaited as the 40-day general strike in Telangana region had hit work in Government offices.

“We expect the strike to be over in a day or two and Government machinery comes back to normalcy soon. That will facilitate us to have full picture,” the sources told Business Line .

Initial estimates pegged loss of crop in about 25-30 lakh acres. The Chief Secretary, Mr Pankaj Dwivedi, held a review meeting with top officials. He directed the Collectors to form mandal level teams to enumerate crop losses.
