Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (Kassia), industry body for 6.5 lakh small industries, demanding waiver of trade licensing and reduction of property tax in urban areas, have threatened to boycott the Global Investors Meet (GIM) scheduled in Bangalore on June 6 and 7.

Mr Prakash N Raiker, president Kassia said “Association feel that since the SSI’s are governed by several other acts, the insistence on trade license is an additional burden.”

“For an industry which is already under the jurisdiction of multiple acts such as pollution control, Factories Act, Shops and Establishment Act, ESI, PF Act which are of statutory nature, trade license is an added burden to the small entrepreneur which dilutes its attention from the productive angle proving detrimental to the growth of the industries,” he added.

Property tax

Regarding property tax, Mr Raiker said “In all other cities and municipal areas like Tumkur, Hubli, Mangalore, Belgaum and Mysore, the property taxes are doubled or tripled in the last two years. There is no uniformity in the tax structure throughout the State.”

Industries cannot afford to pay at this rate. Even for rented property, tax burden will be recovered from tenant only. Ideal rate of tax would be Rs 1 to Rs 1.5 per square feet depending on the locality irrespective of own or rented. “The rate of property tax should be accordingly moderated in an affordable manner,” he suggested.
