Commercial vehicles manufacturer Ashok Leyland, IT bellwether Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology have won the Madras Management Association’s Managerial Excellence Award 2018.

The awards were presented here on Thursday at the 17th MMA Awards for Managerial Excellence (MAME) that recognise overall managerial excellence of companies and institutions headquartered in South India.

Ashok Leyland bagged the award in manufacturing, while TCS and Sathyabama University received the awards for the service sector and the educational institution category, respectively.

A seminar on ‘Managerial Excellence’ was conducted earlier in the day, where the awardees presented their company’s journey, key milestones and challenges and the processes that helped them achieve managerial excellence in their fields.

In his presentation, P Harihar, SVP, Manufacturing and Project planning, Ashok Leyland, said that the period from 2012-13 to 2013-14 was the worst in the history of the company and for the commercial vehicles industry, when the demand for trucks halved.

“But we introduced premium vehicles at a time when the market was struggling to sell even ordinary vehicles,” Harihar said. This, he added, helped the 70-year-old company reposition itself from a low-cost player to a national player in the premium segment.

Suresh Raman, Head of Operations, Tata Consultancy Services, Chennai, said: “TCS strongly believes in the principle that people don’t become legacy, only technologies becomes a legacy.. Sundar Manoharan, Vice-Chancellor, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, said, the 30-year old institute is a pioneer in establishing private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and has been nurturing 4,000 students every year with excellence.

Continuous learning and listening as a managerial principle helped Sathyabama become one of the leading educational institutions in the country, said Mariazeena Johnson, Pro-Chancellor, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, while receiving the award.

MV Satish, Whole-time Director & Senior Executive VP, Larsen & Tourbo, presented the awards to the winners and released a coffee-table book to commemorate the 62-year journey of MMA. The event also saw the launch of the 9th chapter of MMA at Attur in Salem district and the the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the Association.
