Paradip port is the first and so far the only major port in Orissa. It will soon have competition be joined by another port, though from in the private sector.
Dhamra port, a joint venture between Tata Steel and Larsen & Toubro, is due for commissioning shortly. Reports have it that a third port, from second in the private sector, is due to be set up in not-too-distant future.
Gopalpur port project, it is learnt, has received the clearance of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. Right now, limited volumes of traffic are handled at the small cargo handling facility at Gopalpur, a quiet beach resort. The present cargo throughput comprising iron ore, coal, fertilisers, rare earths will be not be more than a few lakh tonnes annually.
The promoters of the new port project is believed to be having an ambitious plan – to make Gopalpur an all-weather port with a capacity of 50 million tonnes.
