In an effort to save trees during project implementation, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL), has decided to translocate about 1,000 trees while creating a separate green belt and beautifying it with greenery.
The trees on the road central median where the piers (pillars) of the metro rail come up will be translocated. The trees will be numbered and the Forest Department's permission will be obtained by HMRL for translocating them mainly around the depots at Uppal and Miyapur, apart from other open places of HMRL and other government organisations.
According to a statement from HMRL, the process of translocation involves digging a small pit to a depth of two to five feet around the tree to be translocated depending upon its age and branches and excess roots will be trimmed after applying organic fertilisers in the pits and fungicide/insecticide to the cut branches of the tree.
After translocation, the agency would take care of the trees for a couple of months.
The Managing Director of HMRL, Mr N.V.S. Reddy, said they have empanelled five agencies for translocation service through a tender process. The Andhra Pradesh Real Estate Developers Association, Green Morning Horticulture Services, Gladform Horticulture Consultancy, Hortus Consultants and Ch. Vijender Reddy have been empanelled.
These firms would be paid Rs 5,850, Rs 15,345 and Rs 25,500 per tree based on the girth. Mr Reddy said that HMR has planned to translocate about 1,000 trees at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore.
HMRL is planning to develop the green belt along the periphery of depot lands and station locations, parking and circulation areas and other metro rail facilities. About 10,000 trees will be planted by HMRL at these locations. Making use of the good height of the metro rail viaduct, picturesque greenery and flower beds will be developed under the metro rail viaduct.
