Samudra Shipyard (P) Ltd has won the prestigious Marine Innovation Award 2012 instituted by JEC Paris, a leading international organisation dedicated to promoting global composite industry.
The award was received by Mr S. Arun, executive director, Samudra Shipyard, at Singapore during the three-day JEC Asia 2012 event.
It was for commercialising the innovative technology of converting Kerala’s traditional houseboats into sophisticated luxury houseboats for the tourism sector that Samudra has won this international recognition along with Industrial Design Centre, IIT-Bombay.
Samudra took up the ambitious project of converting the massive wooden houseboats to composites in 2004 in technical collaboration with IIT-Bombay, IIT-Madras & IIT-Kharagpur.
The project was assisted by TIFAC (The Technology, Information Forecasting and Assessment Council) under the Department of Science & Technology. The Kerala Tourism department and the end users were part of the monitoring committee.
The first product under the project was launched in 2005 and over a period of the next five years, Samudra successfully commissioned 17 reinforced composite houseboats, and exported one to Abhudhabi, Dr S, Jeevan, CEO of Samudra Shipyard, said.
