The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister, Mr K.A. Jayapaul, has announced that three new fishing harbours will be established in the district and an existing one at Pazhayar will be modernised.
Lands identified
“We have identified lands for setting up the fishing harbour at Poompuhar. The project estimate has been prepared to establish it at a cost of Rs 60 crore,” Mr Jayapaul told presspersons here last evening. During the election campaign the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, had promised to set up a fishing harbour at Poompuhar, he said.
New fishing harbours will be established at Nagore and Nagapattinam and the existing one at Pazhayar modernised.

“Funds were allotted for the Pazhayar fishing harbour modernisation proposal more than two years ago, but works did not commence.
"It will now be carried out at a total cost of Rs 27.56 crore,” he said.
Fish landing centre
At Nagore, in addition to the proposed fishing harbour, a fish landing centre will also be constructed at a cost of Rs 10.6 crore, he added.
Later, at a function in the Collectorate, he inaugurated the distribution of enhanced compensation of Rs 2,000/family for the annual 45-day ban on fishing activity.
A total of 22,965 fishing families in the district will be benefitted.
