V.O. Chidambaranar port (earlier known as Tuticorin port), as on March 21, has achieved an all-time record in handling containerised cargo at its terminal.

According to Mr A. Subbiah, Port Chairman, in the current financial year, the terminal has handled 4,50,827 TEUs as on March 21, handling more than that of the previous year, surpassing the target of 4,45,000 TEUs set by the Ministry for the current financial year.

He further said that the port has been handling a variety of import cargo such as granite products, textile machinery, polyester products, raw cashew, raw cotton, waste paper, food products, wheat products, rubber products, cotton fabrics etc. and export cargo such as sugar, paper products, granite items / tiles, garnet sand, garments, chemicals, cotton yard, cotton piece goods, copper products, coir products, charcoal, egg products, frozen sea foods, ilmenite sand, safety matches, salt, tyres, etc.

The above achievement has become possible by the consistent performance of the container terminal team, fully supported by about 12 private container freight stations in and around the port, feeder operators with cooperation of Custom House agents,' and facilities in the port.

The port administration is fully geared up for the setting up of second container terminal in 8th berth under public private partnership mode, awaiting orders from the Supreme Court, he added in a release to the press.

The port has a container terminal operated by PSA SICAL Terminals Ltd, a joint venture of Port of Singapore Authority and South India Corporation Agencies Pvt. Ltd since 1999.
