The Chennai division of Southern Railway recorded its highest ever freight loading of 17.06 million tonnes in the financial year 2011-12. This is despite the ban on dusty cargoes of coal and iron ore at Chennai port.
The annual performance overhauled the target of 16.7 million tonnes set for the division by the Railway Ministry. Nearly 40 per cent of the loading of Southern Railway is done by Chennai division.
