Steel bridges require regular inspection in a systematic way so that there is no disruption of traffic due to lack of maintenance.

Engineers' in the field have to share their knowledge which will help in spreading the latest technologies being adopted at various places, said Mr Kuldeep Chaturvedi, General Manager of South Western Railway (SWR), while speaking at a workshop on “Construction, Inspection and Maintenance of Road and Rail Steel Bridges”.

Mr D.G. Diwate, principal chief engineer, SWR, said that steel is a versatile material which can be used in construction of bridges, adopting latest technologies which also give aesthetic appearance with simple design.

On this occasion, a newsletter was brought out by the IIBE Hubli-Dharwad centre in association with engineering department of SWR.

At the workshop, about eight papers were presented on the concept relevant to rail-cum-road steel bridges by the eminent engineers. South Western Railway's superintending engineer, public works department (PWD), Bellary. Mr S S Khanagavi, chief engineer, PWD, Dharwad, was present.

Earlier, Dr R.S. Dubey, chief bridge engineer, SWR, welcomed the dignitaries. Several engineers from Hubli, Bangalore, Mysore Divisions and Dharwad of both SWR and Public Works Department attended the workshop. Mr T.V. Bhushan, deputy chief engineer (Bridge), Headquarters of SWR, Hubli proposed a vote of thanks.
