Workers of Visakhapatnam port and dock staged a demonstration on Wednesday in protest against corporatisation of ports.
In a press release, the Visakhapatnam Port Employees' Union said the Union Ministry of Shipping had decided to corporatise major ports in the country, without the approval of Parliament, and the JNPT was the first port to suffer the blow. The rest of the ports would be corporatised within a span of two years, the union said.
In protest, JNPT workers were going on strike from Wednesday and in solidarity the Vizag port workers had staged the demonstration. The cargo in the major ports was growing by a healthy 14 per cent and there was no need for the Union Shipping Ministry to pursue such ruinous policies, the union added.
