A monorail, emblazoned with India’s tourism promotion ad, moves along Sydney’s Pyrmont Bridge in the Harbour area. It runs along a 3.5- kmcircular route connecting the Central Business District, shopping areas and areas of tourist interest. India is looking at implementing monorail projects inmany of its cities including Mumbai, where it is at an advanced stage of implementation. The Tamil Nadu Government plans to implement a Rs 16,650-crore, 300-km monorail project in Chennai, with a 111-km network initially. The proposed monorail will supplement the ongoing Metrorail Project which will stretch along two routes from North Chennai to the South and West suburbs over a distance of 45 km. A monorail typically uses a single beam or track with cars broader than the track straddling it or suspended from it. Picture and Text — R. Balaji
