Air travellers from Chennai and Kolkata can now fly with the assurance that their bags will go with them.

This follows the Airports Authority of India (AAI) implementing a new baggage management system called the Sita BagManager, which gives real-time information on the status of passengers’ bags. This in turn helps reduce mishandling and solves baggage issues. Close to 15 million bags are processed at these two airports.

“BagManager will be expanded to 38 AAI airports,” said Maneesh Jaikrishna, Vice- President, SITA, India and Subcontinent, adding that the implementation of the new system will not lead to an increase in the cost of flying for passengers from these two airports.

More than a 100 handheld devices have been issued to workers at the two airports that will allow them to scan baggage tags anywhere and provide information on the location of each bag. The system will help AAI determine which passengers have boarded and which bags have been loaded.

On the basis of this, they can produce reports to highlight mismatches which are critical for security. This is also in line with international guidelines.

The system will ensure proactive monitoring of the baggage process, enabling problems to be identified and resolved before a flight departs.

It will also improve operational decision-making through the provision of real-time information on the mobile devices used by staff members.

Ravi Prakash, Executive Director of AAI, said the implementation of BagManager is part of a strategic partnership with SITA to implement state-of-the-art ICT solutions at airports to cope with the growth of passenger traffic in India.
