Road accident victims on the Gurgaon-Jaipur national highway will soon get cashless treatment in the nearest hospitals.

The treatment will be provided for the first 48 hours, with an upper limit of Rs 30,000 a person.

India accounts for the largest number of road accident deaths in the world. With the aim that no one should be deprived of immediate treatment for want of money, the Road Ministry has signed an agreement with ICICI Lombard for such a project on pilot basis.

The Ministry has made available seed funding of Rs 20 crore, and ICICI Lombard, the insurance firm, plans to execute the project without levying any administrative expense.

It also plans to spend Rs 30 lakh as part of its corporate social responsibility. The insurance firm is tying up with 51 hospitals — both Government and private — on the stretch.

C.P Joshi, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, said the Ministry would like to roll out a pan-India scheme based on experience. Less number of road accident deaths may also mean lower third party claims for insurance service providers.

The Ministry will enrol a large number of volunteers, who will be trained in first-aid and trauma care with AIIMS.
