The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the doubling of Hubli-Chickajur railway line construction.
This line doubling is one of the six railway lines and a railway bridge to cater to both increased passenger and freight needs in various parts of the country.
The six proposals will cost over ₹10,700 crore and most part of the expenditure will be met through extra budgetary resources (institutional financing).
Doubling of Hubli-Chickajur railway line involves the 190-km-long Hubli-Chickajur broad gauge single railway line. The total estimated expenditure will be ₹1,294.13 crore.
The project is likely to be completed in four years and three months during 13th Five Year Plan period and will cover Chitradurga, Davangere, Haveri and Dharwad districts.
The entire route from Pune-Miraj-Hubli-Bengaluru has been identified for doubling, which will not only improve the flow of traffic but also boost overall development of the region.
This stretch is part of an important rail link of passenger trains between Mumbai and Bengaluru and goods trains to the Mangaluru port.
On this route, doubling between Bengaluru-Tumkuru and Arsikere-Chickajur have already been completed. Doubling work between Hubli-Londa part of Hubli-Londa-Vasco-da-Gama, is in progress.
