‘Container cargo sealing process simplified under GST regime’

The Customs Department has simplified the procedures for self-sealing of container cargo, with the introduction of electronic sealing procedure from October 1 under the new GST regime, according to Koka Sudha, Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Vijayawada.

She was interacting with exporters on Wednesday at a meeting organised by the Vizagapatam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

She said the practice of factory stuffing of containers under the supervision of central excise authorities was being replaced by trust-based compliance systems, strengthening the risk management system.

She said self-sealing of cargo, already in vogue, would be confined only to container cargo. Electronic sealing procedures should be used, with RFID tamper-proof seals. The exporters should procure the seals from the vendors at their own expense.

The RFID tag would help the custom authorities to keep track of the container and detect tampering. Exporters availing themselves of the self-sealing facility under the earlier regime would be automatically eligible for the facility. Others should obtain it afresh.

She said the new procedure would be useful both for manufacturer-exporters and merchant exporters. She exhorted all exporters to make use of the facility for hassle-free exports. She promised all cooperation from the government.
