One person was killed and three others were injured in a fire that broke out in a container yard near Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Uran in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in an explosion, police said.

“A fire broke out this afternoon that resulted in explosion in one of the containers in Container Freight Station in Navghar village this afternoon.

One person was killed and three suffered injuries in the incident,” Mr Ankush Shinde, Deputy Police Commissioner, Navi Mumbai, told PTI.

The dead person has not yet been identified.

Seven fire engines and four water tankers were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, said Fire Brigade officials.

“Fire Brigade personnel say the fire may have broken out as the containers had chemicals. If the probe suggests the incident took place due to negligence on the part of the company that owns containers, appropriate action would be initiated against it,” Mr Shinde added.

Government-run JNPT is the country's biggest port and is located near Nhava-Sheva in Navi Mumbai.

Our Bureau adds: The container freight station (CFS) that caught fire on Wednesday belongs to the Maersk group.

Maersk is part of APM group that runs the Gateway Container terminal at JN port.

The Maersk CFS is one of the oldest that caters to JN port.

Several containers with cargo were gutted in the fire which started in the afternoon, an official said.
