The Gangavaram port is taking up construction of four more berths, in addition to the existing five, and the work on the project may begin later this year, according to the Director Capt. Surya Prakash.

He told reporters here that around Rs 950 crore would be invested on the berths and they may be completed by 2013-14. In a short time, the port hasmade rapid strides and handled 26 million tonnes (mt) of cargo so far. During 2010-11, it had handled 14 mt and the target for the current financial year is 16.5 mt.

Capt. Surya Prakash said the port, with a deep draft of 21 metres, was handling the bigger vessels and offering freight advantage to the trade. “Therefore, it is a misconception to state that Gangavaram is depending only on cargo diverted from the main port. We have our own cargoes. We have installed mechanical handling systems for coal and other cargoes and attracting cargo from far-off places in the hinterland,” he said.

He said the port had also set up the latest dust suppression systems and other pollution mitigating measures. It had also provided the promised jobs to the people in adjoining villages of Gangavaram and Dibbapalem.
