Following the Government’s demonetisation drive, Scoot, the low-cost, medium-haul arm of the Singapore Airlines Group, will advance its discounted promotional ticket sale to December from February, as was planned originally.

“The reason we are advancing the promotional sale is to boost sentiments.

Pent-up demand “A lot of people have the money in the banks, it is just that the sentiments are down as not much spending is happening. That is why we will have sales immediately once the pent up demand picks up,” Bharath Mahadevan, Country Head, Scoot India, told Business Line . The airline hopes to tempt passengers with low fares. “The discounted sale will be mainly in Jaipur and Amritsar. We will monitor Chennai as it has not been much affected by the demonetisation move,” Mahadevan said.

The airline launched operations to Chennai and Amritsar in May, followed by Jaipur in October.

For Scoot, daily bookings out of Chennai have been “stable” while that to Jaipur and Amritsar have seen a drop of 10-15 per cent, airline officials said.

Existing routes Scoot currently operates flights to Chennai, Amritsar and Jaipur offering connections to Singapore and onwards to South East Asia, China and Australia, among other destinations.

In a related move, a British Airways spokesperson said that the airline’s September offer was still on, when asked whether the airline was planning something similar to what Scoot is planning in view of the Government’s demonetisation drive.
