To prevent people from buying a ₹5 minimum second class ticket in lieu of the ₹10 platform ticket, the Indian Railways has hiked the minimum fare to ₹10 from November 20, an official release said on Tuesday.
The Ministry had in the last Budget revised the price of platform ticket from ₹5 to ₹10 with a view to controlling the rush on platforms, said the release. For distances up to 15 km, the minimum second class fare is ₹5.
Passengers started purchasing the minimum single journey second class tickets priced at ₹5 instead of the platform ticket, it said, adding that the minimum chargeable fare was being hiked to bring “it at par with the platform ticket charges.”
To begin with, this will be applicable only to second class non-suburban services, it said, hoping that this step would bring down the rush on platforms to manageable levels.
