The Indian Railways earned a record Rs 4,408 crore through scrap auctions in 2010-11, which is 25 per cent higher than the Rs 3,525 crore recovered the previous year. This growth was supported by a 13 per cent growth in quantity of scrap sold and 12 per cent increase in rates/tonne. The increase in quantity was achieved after the Railways undertook a foot-by-foot survey to identify scrap lying at various places.
“A lot of scrap lie in difficult-to-access areas. We got a foot-by-foot survey done by members of the scrap selling department, not by the departmental owners of the scrap. Wherever the surveying team found unaccounted for scrap, they brought it to the notice of the owning department – at times through video evidence,” explained Mr Sanjiv Handa, Member-Mechanical, Indian Railways.
