Indian Railways has started operating roll-on roll-off (RoRo) services allowing trucks to get on trains and cross the Digha rail bridge on river, a move that will lower pollution and save fuel, and save foreign exchange as well.
At present, the Railways operates RoRo services in the Konkan region. According to a statement, the rail bridge over the Ganges near Patna – Digha rail bridge – has been commissioned. After consultations with truck operators, who transport sand from North Bihar to South Bihar through road bridges, such as Mahatma Gandhi Setu, Vikramshila Setu, it has been decided to operate Ro-Ro services across the Digha bridge.
Under this scheme, loaded trucks would be moved on the flat rakes to avoid congestion on roads across Ganges. To start with, this service is being introduced from a private freight terminal at Bihta to Turki station, Muzaffarpur, covering 88 km.
