To boost tuna fishing in Lakshadweep islands, Kerala-based Samudra Shipyard has constructed an all composite tuna fishing boat – MFV Bluefin – for the island administration.

The 20-metre air-conditioned vessel will be positioned at Kavaratti, where there is highest concentration of tuna fish.

The ₹1.5-crore vessel, with a crew accommodation of 14 persons, will complement the efforts of the island administration in scaling up the fishing process to the much sought out Sashimi grade tuna for the international market. According to company officials, the boat will be delivered by end of this month. This is a pilot project and the company is expecting more orders from the administration to cater to the demand.

According to official sources, tuna landing in Lakshadweep is approximately 15,000 tonnes per annum. However, there is no mechanism to fish or process the Sashsmi grade tuna (the yellow fin), as it needs different set of fishing gear on the vessel.
