SpiceJet will induct five 90-seater Bombardier Q 400 aircraft, three of which will join the fleet in the next 10 days, the airline announced on Tuesday.

The remaining two Bombardier aircraft will join the fleet in June this year.

The statement adds that the 90-seater variant is part of the airline’s second purchase order for up to 50 Q-400 turboprops placed in September 2017.

This is the largest-ever single order for the Q400 turboprop aircraft valued at up to $1.7 billion. The airline has already inducted five aircraft as part of this order.

The Bombardier aircraft will be used to operate flights in the domestic skies, the airline said.

Last week, the airline had announced that it will be inducting 16 Boeing 737-800 New Generation aircraft, which were earlier flown by Jet Airways.

Jet Airways’ inability to pay lease rentals for these aircraft to the leasing companies saw them deregistered and available for other airlines.

SpiceJet has 13 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, which have been grounded since March 13 due to the global grounding of this variety of aircraft.

The sudden spike in induction of more aircraft by SpiceJet could also be because of the market opportunity that the low-cost airline sees, due to the troubles at Jet Airways, whose fleet has reduced from close to 119 aircraft to 6-7 at present.
