The Visakhapatnam port is likely to handle 58 million tonnes of cargo this year too, as during the last financial year, according to chairman M.T Krishna Babu.
He said here on Friday that the ongoing projects were to a great extent hampering the handling of cargo during the past two years. "From the next financial year (2015-2016) onwards, we will be able to function to our full capacity," he said and added that dredging in the inner harbour would be completed soon.
Referring to the sagar mala project, he said it was a very good project intended to improve connectivity of the port with the hinterland and paving the way for the speedy evacuation of cargo. All the major ports in the country would be connected. "Once the freight corridors are completed, there would be seamless movement of cargo," he said.
He said the Visakhapatnam port was gearing up for competition with the private ports in the vicinity "but at present we are only slicing the existing cargo. The new projects would have to completed in AP after the bifurcation for the ports to be bustling with activity."
Therefore, he said, a realistic view would have to be taken in adding to the capacities of the existing ports or building new ones. "It should be done, but in a planned manner," he added.
