Last year, The Hindu BusinessLine instituted the Changemaker Awards to commemorate an important milestone in its journey — the start of the 25th year of its publication.

The idea was to mark this special occasion in a unique manner, by creating a set of awards to celebrate organisations and people who, through their ideas and their work, have materially transformed society.

A strong process was put in place, in consultation with our knowledge partners — Ashoka Foundation and Deloitte — to invite nominations, define the screening/evaluation criteria, and arrive at the final set of nominees.

An independent jury comprising Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog (jury chair); S Ramadorai, former CEO & MD, Tata Consultancy Services; Naina Lal Kidwai, Banker & former country head and group GM, HSBC India; Gopal Srinivasan, CMD, TVS Capital Funds; Rohini Nilekani, Founder-Chairperson, Arghyam; Debjani Ghosh, President–Nasscom, and CV Madhukar, Investment Partner, Omidyar Network, chose the winner across six categories of the awards.

The exercise received an overwhelming response with as many as 588 nominations, from which 34 were shortlisted.

The jury then chose the following winners: National Payments Corporation of India (Changemaker of the Year); Dr Abhay & Dr Rani Bang (Iconic Changemaker); Srikanth Bolla (Young Changemaker); Bandhan Bank (Changemaker — Financial Transformation); ZMQ Development (Changemaker — Digital Transformation) and Sridhar Vembu (Changemaker — Social Transformation).

The awards were given away at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi in March with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as the chief guest.

Second edition

The time has now come to kick-start the process for the second edition of the BusinessLine Changemaker Awards. Like last year, the exercise begins with a call for nominations. The nomination window opens on September 15, and will remain open for a month. The nominations can be filed online at www.blchangemakers.com.

This website, dedicated to the awards, details the awards, their rationale, the criteria for nominations and other information that is required.

This year the process has been strengthened by bringing on board an independent validation partner, Niiti Consulting, to validate the shortlisted nominee list before it goes to the jury.

The scrutiny of nominations will begin mid-October, followed by the validation process and the jury meeting. The awards will be given away early in 2019.

If you are a changemaker, or you know someone you feel deserves to be recognised, do take a few minutes and visit www.blchangemakers.com and submit a nomination.
