To promote ‘Make in India’ in the field of electronics, the government is likely to notify six more products that would require compulsory safety registration from December 1.
The six items to be included in the list for ‘Compulsory Registration of Electronics Goods to Indian Safety Standards’ are power adaptors for IT equipment; power adaptors for audio, video, and similar electronic apparatus; UPS/inverters of rating less than or equal to 5kVA; DC/AC supplied electronic control gear for LED modules; cells/batteries for use in portable applications; and fixed general purpose LED luminaries.
The decision in this regard was taken in a recent internal meeting of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), chaired by Telecom and IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, government sources told BusinessLine .
These products were notified last year and were supposed to be implemented under the compulsory registration scheme in May, which was extended till August, and again till December 1.
“The government is unlikely to further extend the date and it was decided that it should be implemented from December 1,” an official said.
In October 2013, the government had made registration compulsory for 15 electronic and IT products to ensure safety.
The 15 products included video games, microwave oven, laptop, notebook and televisions.
In November last year, more products such as cash registers, points of sale terminals, copying machines/duplicators, smart card readers, passport readers and power banks for portable appliances were notified.
As per the government order, organisations/importers/sellers/distributors of the notified goods need to conform to the specified standards and get a registration number from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) after testing from BIS-recognised labs.
The scheme, as a part of National Policy on Electronics-2012, was formulated with a view to providing Indian consumers the right to enjoy world class goods as also upgrade the quality of domestic products to make them global competitive, thereby reduce dependence on imported items.
