In a bid to encourage start-ups to come up with tech solutions centred on Internet of Things (IoT), Nasscom has launched the country’s first such centre – Centre of Excellence – at its ‘Startup Warehouse’ in Bengaluru.

The centre is a joint initiative between the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeITY), Education and Research Network (ERNET), and NASSCOM.

Further, the CoE is also supported by Accenture, Cisco, Intel, HCL Technologies, Qualcomm, TCS, and L&T Technology Services, among others.

Urging entrepreneurs to develop products that can help farmers and others, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Law & Justice and IT, said that focus on skill development as well as high-end research is important for the success of IoT in India.

V Manjula, Principal Secretary (Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology, e-Governance and Science & Technology), Govt of Karnataka, said: “With this initiative, we hope to give start-ups an opportunity to innovate in the field of IoT and take the IT sector into newer and greater heights.”

The buzz around IoT is gaining momentum globally, as well as in India, as companies see the benefit of installing sensors embedded in their systems that can help them get better insights of their systems. Industry estimates point out that there are 120 IoT focused companies, addressing an expected market opportunity of $15 billion by 2020.

The CoE laboratory, along with the Nasscom 10,000 Startups Warehouse, has the capacity to incubate up to 40 start-ups. R Chandrashekhar, President of Nasscom, added that the CoE will also function as an enabler of funding, accelerating, and mentoring for start-ups in this area.
