With the summer heat obliterating pretty much every outdoor activity that you can possibly think of, we have no options but to turn indoors to keep yourself entertained. And, what better way to do so than check out the most awesome games you can play right on your smartphone, for free!

Badland

When I first started playing Badland, I wondered if it’s a blend os a very dark Angry Birds and a Flappy Bird. But unlike Angry birds, you don’t have to launch anyone anhwhere and unlike Flappy Bird, you can actually make some progress after the first couple of unsuccessful attempts. Badland is a side-scrolling action adventure set in a forest full of various inhabitants. Although the forest looks like it’s from some beautiful fairytale, there seems to be something terribly wrong. You have to control what looks like a plump little critter trudging along the forest quite poorly on its own. You’ll have to help it navigate the forest without any mishaps, while collecting power-ups and avoid being sliced up by spinning saws in the forest. We don’t really know where the critter is heading, but if you aren’t quick enough to proceed and happen to be too close to the left side of the screen, the end is near. In case, you get bored playing the game alone, ask your friends or siblings to match up to your progress with the multiplayer mode which allows four people to play on the same device across 23 levels.

QuizUp

Remember how you used to binge on Bournvita Quiz Contests as a kid? Well, let this be a tribute to those summer days spent poring through those quiz books. QuizUp not only lets you play against people from around the world (you even earn a badge for having played against people from 25 different countries), but it also lets you challenge your friends on topics of your choice. The listed topics are seemingly endless – Name The City, Breaking Bad, Herbs & Spices, Finish The Saying, Game of Thrones – you get the drift. QuizUp keeps adding new topics on a regular basis – the latest ones being The World of Music and Eurovision.

Trust me when I say this app can be dangerously addictive. With every stage you clear, you will need more points to clear the next one, so you need to take more quizzes and get more answers right to clear it. Most of the time, QuizUp automatically tries to pit you against someone at more or less the same level as you are, so you aren’t burnt to the ground! This app has kept me awake way past my bedtime on most days this summer. Chances are it’ll do the same to you.

Pocket Planes

If you’ve ever played the Tycoon (Rollercoaster Tycoon, Cinema Tycoon) series on your desktop, Pocket Planes will feel familiar to you. You start off with a couple of places from a continent of your choice. Your job is to manage your fleet and earn coins to buy more planes and airports and basically boost your business.

The get-go can be a bit slow with small planes, few airports and limited seats. But once you’ve waited it out and earned enough money to buy a couple of big airports, it’s great fun to manage all your planes with cargo and passengers flying all over the world. The game has an 8-bit design, which would have been endearing if it wasn’t for the fact that we were playing it on a smartphone and would have appreciated better design.
