An overwhelming response to JioPhone resulted in the handset getting more than 6 million pre-bookings within a day of its opening on August 24, prompting Reliance Retail (RRL) to temporarily halt the process.
Additionally, more than 10 million people evinced interest in the handset, which is being offered at an “effective zero price”, multiple sources — both industry and channel — told BusinessLine .
“The bookings and interests from potential buyers came in from across the country, with equal participation from metros, smaller towns and rural areas. Orders could be placed through both both online and offline modes, which also enabled people from remotest corners place their orders,” one of the sources said.
RRL, which is retailing the handset, encourages use of digital payments, especially the popular mobile app Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM). Sources also said the company has temporarily halted the pre-booking process, which is expected to resume soon.
The JioPhone deliveries are expected to begin during the Navratri festival this month.
