Data centre services provider Tulip Telecom is partnering with IBM to set up a 9-lakh sq ft data centre in Bangalore at an investment of Rs 900 crore over three years.

The data centre is touted to be the largest in Asia Pacific and the third largest in the world. Tulip expects the first occupant to go live by July-end.

The 9-lakh sq feet space in Whitefield, near Bangalore, comes through the Rs 230-crore acquisition of the SADA IT Parks facility earlier this year.

IBM, the strategic partner for Tulip, will offer design consultancy for the data centre and also turnkey services for the phase-1 of the project.

German company Schnabel Consultants, which specialises in data centre consultancy, will be engaged in peer review and ensuring the project complies with international standards.

The basic structure is already present – fit-outs will happen as clients come, said Lt. Col. H. S. Bedi, Director of Tulip. The company expects the first customer to go live by July 30. One-third space will be sold within the first year and the entire space will be sold out in three years, said the company. “There is strong interest from several domestic and global companies operating in the telecom, financial and enterprise space,” said Mr Sanjay Jain, CEO, Tulip Telecom.

Mr Ashish Kumar, General Manager, IBM Global Technology Services – India, said: “IBM operates and manages around 85 lakh sq ft of data centre space globally. Last year alone, it has built over 3 lakh sq ft. We will bring in all the expertise to Tulip's centre.”

Cloud business

Mr A. S. Rajgopal, CEO, Tulip Data Centre Service, which acquired SADA IT Parks, said this data centre will form the foundation for forming the cloud business in India. It is claimed to be the largest data centre in Asia Pacific and the third largest in the world. “It is equivalent to 20 large data centre facilities in a single facility,” said Mr Rajgopal.

The world's two largest data centres are in the US – Chicago (11 lakh sq ft) and Atlanta (9.9 lakh sq ft).

Meanwhile, Tulip Data Centre Service expects to dilute 25-30 per cent equity stake to a financial strategic partner and expects to see results on this front in 2-3 months.

Tulip operates data centres in Mumbai and Delhi.
