Asian markets were trading higher on Wednesday after Tuesday’s steep losses due to Japan’s devastating earthquake and unfolding nuclear crisis. But news of another fire at the earthquake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant north of Tokyo and fears of more radiation leaks kept the investors jittery.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged 352.6 points or 4.1 per cent to 8,957.75. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 99.09 points or 0.44 per cent at 22,579.16. Singapore’s Straits Times gained 7.75 points or 0.26 per cent to 2,953.83. South Korea’s Kospi rose 21.21 points or 1.1 per cent to 1,945.13.
Australia’s S&P/Asx 200 climbed 32 points or 0.71 per cent to 4,560.70. China’s Shanghai Composite was up 11.33 points or 0.39 per cent at 2,907.59. Taiwan’s Taiex jumped 89.9 points or 1.09 per cent to 8,324.68.
