At 19, Mr Dhaval Ravindra Shethwala of Jalan Metallurgical Ltd has the distinction of being the youngest director on the board of a listed company, and at 101 years Mr Munishwar Nath Sardana of Sukhjit Starch & Chemicals is the oldest.

With a degree in Commerce, Mr Shetwala is on the board of the company that is into mining. However, no further details were available about Jalan Metallurgical.

Mr Sardana was first appointed as Director in Sukhjit Starch in 1973. The company manufactures various maize by-products, catering to a wide spectrum of industries such as food and beverage, paper and board, industrial applications and animal nutrition.

According to the BSE, there are six directors on an average in listed companies. In the 2,690 companies that have disclosed information about directors, 21,764 directorship positions were occupied by about 16,200 individuals.

While 428 companies are yet to share the database on directors, the BSE found 14 companies' data as either incomplete or needing some verifications. As many as 574 companies were not required to comply with Clause 49, as their paid-up capital is less than Rs 3 crore or net worth is below Rs 25 crore.

According to BSE, of the 2,690 companies, 890 (33.1 per cent) have a non-executive chairman, of whom 416 (15.5 per cent) are promoter-directors. State Bank of Mysore has the maximum number of directors at 21

Of the 16,197 individuals, 13,223 hold only one directorship each while 6,645 hold only independent directorship positions.

About 37 per cent (or 5,969) of them are between 46 and 60, 13 per cent (2,112 individuals) are aged between 36 and 45, and 14 per cent are above 70.

Only 867 are women, representing 5.4 per cent, occupying just 1,038 directorships. However, there is at least one woman on the board of 808 listed companies.

As many as 321 individuals holding 342 directorship positions are foreign nationals.

Mr Rajendra Ambalal Shah takes the preeminent position of having maximum number of directorships at 14, while 336 persons hold five or more than five directorships.

The companies in which Mr Shah holds directorship are Abbott India Ltd, ACC, Asian Paints, Bombay Dyeing, Century Enka, Clariant Chemicals, Colgate-Palmolive, Deepak Fertilisers, Godfrey Philips, Lupin, Pfizer, Piramal Healthcare, Procter & Gamble and Wockhardt.

As many as 422 directors are from the civil services.
