The Chairman of the Krishna River Management Board has indicated that a meeting will be held within a week to review the drinking water supply situation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and it would take up appropriate decisions regarding further release of water.
In a statement, the Engineer-in-Chief, Irrigation of AP, said the State Government is committed to fulfilling the drinking water needs of the population under the Krishna Delta System and take appropriate measures.
It also sought to clarify that the recent order on supply of water to the Krishna Delta System issued on June 24 only gives the rate of release and duration of release of water and that this would be reviewed based on the requirement in a week.
He termed as incorrect reports that 10 TMC of water was permitted by the State Governor ESL Narasimhan and this was reduced to 3.6 TMC to meet the drinking water needs of four districts under the Krishna delta system.
Referring to the meeting conducted by the Governor on June 21, the statement said it was decided to release 10 TMC of water to the Krishna delta to meet the drinking water needs in Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari and Prakasham districts up to August 2014.
Thereafter, after reviewing the water position in the reservoirs of Srisailam and Nagarjunsagar, AB Pandya, Chairman of the Krishna River Management Board, advised release of water as per the demands of the respective states as agreed during the meeting with the Governor.
It was decided to release water to the Krishna Delta System at 6000 cusecs of water for a week and to convene another meeting of the board to review the situation.
