Ambition, business acumen, courage, dreams and empathy are the building blocks of outstanding leadership,” said Harish Bhat, Member Group Executive Council, Tata Sons, while delivering the third N J Yasaswy Memorial Lecture at The ICFAI University campus in Hyderabad. He called these the ABCDE of leadership and explained with several examples in how great leaders have exhibited these qualities.

Giving the examples of leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Darbari Seth, Ex-Chairman Tata Chemicals, Indira Gandhi and Kapil Dev, who had great ambitions for themselves as well as for their institutions and the country, Bhat said that this is what drove them to great success as leaders.

He gave the examples of the leaders who led Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to become the largest and most successful IT company and praised them for their business acumen and focus on one idea that made their organisation successful.

Courage is fundamental to being a leader, he said, and leaders like Ratan Tata exhibited leaps of courage when they took up challenging tasks like developing India’s first home-designed car, he said. A leader is a dreamer not merely a doer, he further added, giving the example of Mahatma Gandhi, who inspired the nation through his dream of a free India. Empathy – understanding other people and caring for other people is another quality of great leaders and Bhat said that the Dalai Lama exhibited this quality in abundance. “Each of us is a leader to our team and also to our family and these simple building blocks of leadership will bring out our true potential,” Bhat elaborated.

Bhat paid rich tributes to N J Yasaswy and remembered his contributions as a visionary, leader and a great builder of the ICFAI group of institutions. C H Hanumantha Rao, Chancellor, ICFAI University, presided over the function. J Mahender Reddy, Vice Chancellor, welcomed the gathering and recalled the contribution of Yasaswy in building ICFAI. The lecture was attended by students, faculty and research scholars of the University and was also web casted live to all the 11 universities and six IBS campuses of the ICFAI Group.

Yasaswy taught corporate finance to Harish Bhat at IIM, Ahmedabad in the 1985-87 batch, which also had Raghuram Rajan, the RBI Governor.
