The Karnataka government has shortlisted 183 engineering colleges for creating an ecosystem of entrepreneurs.

The students in these colleges can submit their ideas to impressIT, a platform for young engineering students. A total of 10 winning entries will be showcased in the BangaloreIT.biz event from October 17 to 19 and students would get placed in companies such as SAP and Infosys.

These students will be mentored by the likes of Infosys executive co-chairman S Gopalakrishnan, and V.R. Ferose, managing director of SAP Labs.

“Entrepreneurs can bring their ideas and showcase the same to academia and industry,” said M N Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Karnataka.

According to Mr Ferose, there is an urgent need to create more new product companies in India and most importantly from Bangalore. Students through their colleges can submit ideas and some may even get funded depending on the business potential of the idea.

This, in turn, can create more jobs in Karnataka. “In Bangalore, 6 lakh IT professionals work and one out of every ten works in the sector. We need to keep this engine running,” said Gopalakrishnan.

The industry is building an ecosystem for IT, IT-enabled services and Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM). To enable electronics manufacturing, industry body ELCINA has partnered with Vittal Innovation City (VIC) to launch India’s first ESDM cluster in Karnataka in Ananthpur district, which is 117 km from Bangalore airport.
