EnCube Labs India will partner with Massachusetts Institute Technology (MIT) to help engineering colleges in Kerala with entrepreneurship programmes.
The APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University here has roped in EnCube to help affiliated colleges to roll out the innovation-led entrepreneurship programmes.
Innovative learning
The EnCube Network contains angel investors, mentors, and technology advocates who help engineering colleges to engage with them in innovation programmes.
An Entrepreneurship Mentor Development Programme (EMDP) will be held from October 19 to 25 at the FabLab at Technopark and EnCube Innovation Centre here.
The EMDP model envisages innovative learning approach by enhancing the engineering curriculum by imparting design thinking and ‘maker skills’ to students.
This approach emerged out of numerous interactions with makers, academicians, and management experts across the globe.
The model was tested and validated with students from MIT and IITs to rural colleges in India over a period of time in the form of workshops and personal interactions.
Fab technologies
The curriculum encourages enrolling colleges to create, establish and sustain modern innovation centre inside the campus with latest fabrication technologies. This will help the colleges to roll out innovation workshops, sessions, and interactions with mentors from across the globe.
EnCube’s EMDP is a residential learning experience for faculty participants where they live with mentors and has access to the FabLab facility on 24x7 basis.
The EnCube learning model was developed at MIT and helps to develop expertise in creating student startups in college campuses in the coming years.
It suggests use of FabLab, a maker lab movement started at MIT, as a tool to innovate on product ideas and bringing them out through entrepreneurial initiative. Kerala has three accredited FabLabs today.
Business models
It will encourage colleges to engage with entrepreneurship learning models and create a vibrant ecosystem inside the campus to nurture student startup dreams.
The programme is aimed at helping the faculty representatives to learn about innovation techniques by observing the problems very close.
Hands-on technology development will give them exposure to current technologies in 3D modelling, product development, system design and embedded systems.
The faculty will be able to create business models for the products they make, says Kuncharia Isaac, Vice Chancellor of the Technological University.
“The one-week-long entrepreneurship mentor development workshop should help our colleges start the process of nurturing tomorrow’s entrepreneurs.”
Product ideas
Rajesh Nair, visiting scholar of MIT, and founder of TechTop and the EMDP evangelist, said that the students here are capable of building product ideas to solve daily life problems.
“The real challenge is to give them knowledge to build ideas without fear of failure.”
Rajesh Nair will be assisted by entrepreneur Paul Anand and other well-known entrepreneurs for the programme.
