“How do you build a successful career and how do you successfully manage a work-life balance? No one knows the perfect answer to this question. But if you work on a plan and implement it with tenacity, you can achieve the targets you set for yourself,” said S Sivakumar, Divisional Chief Executive, Agri Business, ITC.

Delivering a lecture on ‘It’s All About Management, Even Your Career’ at a Hyderabad Management Association conference, Sivakumar drew parallels from his own experience in rolling out ITC’s e-Choupal, an initiative that is aimed at increasing the incomes of farmers.

“Having an idea is not enough. One needs to follow it with tenacity, bringing in a lot of energies,” he said.

Stating that work-life balance is very important, he said one needs to find a perfect rhythm that suits one’s own job and family requirements. “Having a good work-life balance is not about allotting 9 am to 5 pm for work and 5 pm to 9 pm for the family. It’s a kind of 24x7 exercise. It is a collective decision of you, the enterprise you work for and your family.”

Discipline in learning is very crucial. “What differentiates you from others is how good you are in building social capital. You run into several dots every time. Keep investing in trust, which is vital in building relationships,” Sivakumar said.

He said innovation and collaboration play a crucial role in achieving one’s goals.

“How do you translate innovation into reality? You need tenacity. You need to collaborate with partners in real time and all the time to implement the plan for you. You need good communication skills because you are trying to convince someone else to work on your dream,” he pointed out. “In order to win over someone to work for your plan, you need to motivate them. It happens only through conversation and empathy with that person’s concerns,” Sivakumar observed.

Responding to a query from a student, Sivakumar said one should be ready to think and work beyond one’s tasks.

“Your work will be visible to potential mentors.”
